Pro - Office futures

Challenge: How might we imagine the future of work offices in Mexico?

Year: 2017

I was invited to participate in the challenge of "Office futures" (A platform to speculate on the future of workspaces through research and critical design)

Advisor: Elizabeth Martínez (MX) / Jorge Diego Etienne (MX)

Challenge:
I got invited to this project to validate the workframes about speculative design about the future of work at offices, in Mexico. The challenge was to look for trends, and relevant topics to connect the dots between facts and create patterns that allow us to design a scenario for 2050.

Process:

Workframes and keywords were given at the beginning of the workshop. I chose the topic of productivity, as a social and concentration frame

Research / Key facts:

  • Each person works 2,250 hours a year. (The general average is 1,748 hours) -According to the OCDE

  • The more you work and the less you rest, which translates into lower productivity

  • Compared with other countries, it is one of the few vacation days by law per year, with only 6.

Future scenario:

The management style of hierarchies in the Mexican workplace is affecting employee productivity due to a lack of motivation and adequate work culture. In the near future, Mexico will continue to be the main country where more hours are worked and less time is resting, producing fatigue and mental blocks affecting productivity in the workplace. There will be an imbalance and consequently slow progress, influencing lower economic growth in the country.

Concept:

Time factor:

  • Time will always be an important element for workers and for workspaces.

  • Time passes, regardless of the tasks performed or not.

HMW?:

  • How could we use time effectively?

  • How can we improve job performance within Mexican offices in the future?

  • How could we do our work at certain times without needing to lose time for most of the day?

Solution:

Desk efficiency indicator: Time will always be an important element for workers and for workspaces, since we always have established schedules that tell us “what to do”, such as: Arriving early, going to eat, returning to the office, leaving at a certain time, etc. Causing a repetitive routine of dependence on the intangible. In the near future, companies will not measure time, but productivity, seeking to produce more value per person, and consequently, the greater results for the company. Taking into account that the responsibility of those who work is to set limits and not become unconditional but to work for results.

Learnings:

I learned a lot about foresight and the challenge it takes to create future scenarios to create products.

It was challenging as it was all experimental and without limitations.
